21/5/2009Verdict on flat plans delayed

A DECISION on plans to build flats next to one of Glasgow's oldest Victorian terraces has been put on hold for a fortnight.

Curry King Charan Gill is one of 150 people who have objected to the plan by Sanctuary Scotland Housing Association.

It wants to build 31 flats on a vacant site at the junction of Argyle Street and Lymburn Street in Kelvingrove.

The flats would be used mainly for refugees who are presently homeless.

Objectors say that the six-storey block includes too many flats and insist the design is not in keeping with the area.

Planner Jim Patrick said the design was similar to what was originally on the site in 1890.

He added: "If the building line was to be pushed back by 4m and the height reduced by one floor, the site would be uneconomic and would probably remain as a gap site."

Planners had recommended the scheme get the go-ahead but councillors have decided to delay a decision to allow the local community council to meet.

A petition against the development from local residents stated: "The proposed development grossly detracts from the character of the area."
