16/6/2008Icing is on the cake for designer

TEENAGERS came up with some excellent designs of their own after being asked to create cakes to mark the 140th anniversary of Charles Rennie Mackintosh's birth.

The senior pupils at Notre Dame High School and Glasgow Metropolitan College jumped at the chance to celebrate one of Glasgow's top designers and architects.

Sami Rostron, 17, designed an edible birthday present with icing to look like wrapping paper in a Mackintosh design.

She has just left school and set up a business, the Cushty Cake Company.

Amber Cowan, Joanne Hamill, Ashley Havelin and Arlene Donally, who are all 17, made a cake in the shape of two Macintosh chairs with a table set for afternoon tea.

Students at the Metropolitan College have created a total of 16 cakes to mark the architect's big day.

A panel made up of representatives of the Willow Team Rooms and Top Tier Designer Cakes, Ian Dunsmore, deacon convener of the Trades House, and broadcaster Kirsty Wark will decide who will win the cash prize.

All of the competition cakes were on display at Scotland Street School until June 11 and were then moved to the Trades Hall in Glassford Street.
