Edit City's Grand Greek Temple
ONE of the grandest and most imposing churches in the west end of Glasgow is Wellington Church.
It is one of the few surviving Greek revival churches in the city and is unusual in that the huge Corinthian columns at its entrance continue around the sides of the building.
The overall effect is of a Greek Temple and its grandeur is increased as it is built on a huge podium set back from University Avenue in the Hillhead area of the city.
The idea of the elevated site is similar to that of University College, London, and the style of the building is comparable to the Church of the Madeleine in Paris.
Wellington Church was designed by architect Thomas Lennox Watson for the United Presbyterian Church but is now owned by the Church of Scotland.
Work started in 1882 and was completed two years later.
Today the church is used widely by many local community groups and clubs.
It also plays host to many events throughout the year including the West End Festival and BBC Music Live.
During term time, the crypt attracts many students of Glasgow University who like to relax there and take advantage of the snacks and drinks that are on sale.
